CYMRU CLIMB YR WYDDFA FOR A FREE TIBET. An Informal Tibet Solidarity Campaign.

'Olympic Torch of Shame'

Cymru Climb for a Free Tibet.

See:
http://www.reuters.com/article/sportsNews/idUSB33504920080429

There is every possibilty that China has pulled off a flanker, obviously taking the 'Torch of Shame' through Tibet would have risked riot and revolt, the Chinese fear world response to any hard line Chinese re-action to protests in Tibet. Thus it is quite possible, the ''Other Torch'' is on it's way up Everest already and it may be only a matter of days before the Chinese announce to the world, that the 'Torch of Shame' has reached the summit of Everest. No doubt they will do so with much propaganda that is as much about claiming sovereignty over Tibet as anything to promote the Olympic games. Thus, despite the best intentions of a number of patriots and others to make journey to Eryri to reach summit of Yr Wyddfa at about same time as that ''Other Torch'' reaches summit of Everest, to hold a good solidarity gathering and rise up Flags of Tibet and Cymru, they may not be able to make it in time from other parts of the land. Thus, best bet is for Patriots and others living in area of Eryri to be ready for a ''Go'' as soon as they hear news that the 'Torch of Shame' is nearing the summit or has reached the summit. It is better that at least one or more Patriots carry out this action of Support and Solidarity with Tibet than no one does it at all. For further information see previous posts also The Welsh Patriot blog at http://welshpatriot.blogspot.com/ NB: The above has caught me out, I was planning to make my way to Eryri about Mid May, by then it could be to late? However, I shall anyway endevour to make my way up Yr Wyddfa some time over the latter May B.H. Myself by Train, being totally unfit and more used to the Urban pavements of London, than pathways up mountains, but it's the thought that counts. This latter bank holday weekend between May 23 - 26 could be generally best time for most people, not least families to make journey to Eryri to make their own contribution of support and solidarity with Tibet. In this sense it would not be too late to rise up your own National Flag, be it Y Ddraig Goch or Baner Glyndwr along with a Tibetan Flag (Obtainable via Web, send for now). Remember, if you have the facilities to do so, get your own Free Tibet action fotos up on blogs or websites or into Flicr etc. Also send copies to Free Tibet Campaigns throughout the World, one final thing to say and very important: DO NOT ATTEMPT CLIMBING UP ERYRI UNLESS YOUR ARE AN EXPERIENCED CLIMBER, IF WALKING UP PLEASE CONSULT GUIDE BOOKS AS TO SAFEST, EASIEST AND QUICKEST PATHS TO SUMMIT. TAKE NOTE OF WEATHER CONDITIONS AND DRESS TO SUIT THE CIRCUMSTANCES OK! HAVING SAID ALL THAT, PASS THIS INFORMATION ON AND LETS SEE HOW MANY TIBETAN FLAGS WE CAN SEE FLYING ON YR WYDDFA OVER THAT MAY B.H. I am making this as interesting as possible and not just a weekend of protest, you can have a good bank holiday weekend touring Eryri, not least Pen y Gwyrd Tafarn and Beddgelert area, Inn of Sixth Happiness and all that.

CYMRU - CHINA CONNECTIONS, Welsh Christian Missionaries.

.
The stuff I have on file often amazes me, but just as well I am an avid reader and collector of information on Welsh History. Some where along the line, I came across these books and decided to photocopy the covers for future ref. The matter of Tibet which is concentrating my mind at moment prompted my ''Grey Cells'' into reminding me that I once meant to read more on Welsh Missionaries. Never got around to doing that, but at least these rather poor foto copies have come to good use at last, to publish in this post to perhaps prompt your interest in this direction. So note the books and do some sussing out on the web to see what you come up with beyond Wikipedia (see below).
.
.
Griffith John - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Griffith John (December 14, 1831 – July 25, 1912) was a Welsh Christian Congregationalist missionary to China and a pioneer evangelist with the London ...en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griffith_John - 34k - Cached - Similar pages . Griffith John is a very important Welsh historical figure and there is quite a lot on him on the web worth reading, which I have just done (some of it). I remember now where and when I first got an interest in this direction. In years before my father died I used to visit him in Swansea, whilst visiting the library there I came upon a number of books that identified Swansea as quite an important place in post Reformation religious history of Wales.
.
Swansea and area becomes emensly important in history of Protestant roots and revivalism in Wales but also as a very important missionary centre, and still is I believe, one as only to see the number of Chapels (sadly many in decline) in the area to realise this. Here one should take note of the story of Ilston, see link here: Oliver Cromwell - Cromwell Britain - Ilston Ilston is a small, inland village, in the heart of the Gower peninsula, West Glamorgan. It stands at the head of an attractive wooded valley, Ilston Cwm, ...www.olivercromwell.org/ilston.htm - 19k - Cached - Similar pages Note in particular The Ilston Book and it's importance in connection to Welsh History, see link here > Ilston Book - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Ilston Book is the earliest record of a Baptist church in Wales, and is so named after the location of its meeting place near the ruins of the old ...en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilston_Book - 19k - Cached - Similar pages . There is a great deal worthy of study about Swansea as not just a Welsh Religious Centre but also as a World Religious Centre as example the story of the Welsh Bible College, see link here > Rees Howells, Intercession, Revival and the Bible College. Christian. Afterwards, the college sold it for several times the buying price and put the money into the Kingdom as the Lord had said. Today the Penllergaer council ...www.byfaith.co.uk/paulreeshowells.htm - 43k - Cached - Similar pages.
.
Now more to point and purpose of this post, that is the story of Welsh Missionary David Davies, It would be a good read for anyone but particularly of Welsh Interest is the rather sad connection of David Davies to the story of Gladys Aylward, played by Ingrid Bergman in the film Inn of the Sixth Happiness, this story is revisted in following link on p5. It is indeed very illuminating and rather ironic that Gladys Aylward got all the film fame but David Davies, more or less is forgotten. Does he even have a plaque placed in his memory? Some one let me know please, meanwhile check out Visiting the Inn of the Sixth Happiness P5 in article read via this link > [DOC] The Evangelical Library: ‘LIVE ISSUES’ - Lunchtime Seminar 1, 2003 File Format: Microsoft Word - View as HTML But last year, when I read the biography, by Frederick Tatford, ( called David Davies : Missionary Hero Wester Press second printing 1972) I formed a ...www.evangelical-library.org.uk/lectures/christian_biography.doc - Similar pages . I cannot find anything else on Web at moment regards David Davies but there is the book if you want to know more about David Davies Missionary Hero.
.

.

At present and up to and through August China will be very much be in the News, good opportunity I hope for our Welsh Media to tell the story of Welsh Missionaries to China as Griffith John and David Davies. However, do not contact me for any further Information as I do not know much more than what I have read above, there are others in Wales more knowlegable in these areas than I. In passing, I can bring your attention that Greenwich Maritime Museum Archive Library as some fascinating material on missionary endeavours as letters and ships logs etc. I went there to do research on other Welsh Interests but soon got drawn into the history of British Maritime Imperial expansion in Africa, the Far East and Pacific post 1815 to 1860. It's quite epic, with British Gun Boats shelling African Villages and and indeed Cannibals did eat missionaries. Really amazing ''Boys Own Adventure'' stuff but unfortunatly an history greatly ignored in many ways by modern media as TV & Film.
.
Myself I am pretty much interested in the Pacific history for number of reasons which I will put aside for the moment, I have not here in this post gone political regards subject of Christianity and Imperialism or whatever, suffice to say for one moment I am just focusing on individuals with no grinding of axes. This in mind is there anyone out there who can tell me something about Valmai Dunbar, see photo of her grave stone below. I took this photograph while looking around cemetery of Chapel in Bon y Maen, Swansea, the epitaph really caught my imagination ''She Fell Asleep in Africa'' . Valmai died at the very young age of 32 as a Missionary in Africa it appears stated on the head stone. Myself just do not have time to research much more, but whatever, I have always thought the Epitaph on her grave stone is very emotive, good title for a book or even a song and maybe Mal Pope is the man to write that song, perhaps for his own singer daughter to sing. Anyway, I would be very pleased if anyone can tell me more about Valmai Dunbar, is her body even in this grave stone or was her name placed there ''In Memoriam'', as is often done regards people who die far away from home (see my previous post on a Confederate grave at Ewenny). Suffice to say, this photo is placed here in homage to all those who made sacrifices for their beliefs, I might not be at one with their Christian faith completly but I admire their personal faith to what they believed in and made sacrifices for.

FREE TIBET - FREE WALES: What Can The Welsh Do To Support The Olympics Campaign?

Before I took recent break from blogging, I managed to put something up in a post on this matter of Cymru - Tibet Solidarity over at http://welshpatriot.blogspot.com/ Then the 'Torch of Shame' was just about to arrive in London, now it's reached Austrailia and I am more than just a little bit disappointed by Aboriginal people, of all people allowing themselves to be used to welcome China's 'Torch of Shame'. Very disappointed to say the least, see link here > News results for Olympic Torch in Australia Mirror.co.uk Olympic torch relay goes uninterrupted in Australia - 54 minutes ago It was the closest any protester came to the torch during its three-hour journey as 80 runners carried it 10 miles through Canberra's tree-lined boulevards. ...Houston Chronicle - 2943 related articles »Tibet banner gets US citizen kicked off Mount Everest - CNN International - 609 related articles »Indonesian torch relay route reduced to stadium laps - CBC.ca - 645 related articles » Of course the reason for Austrailia's P.M. talking about ''Coming Down Like a Ton of Bricks on Anti - Torch Protests'' (sounding a bit like the Chinese Governor of Tibet there?) is because Australia's present economic boom is owed very much to China's Capitalist Communism's so called ''Economic Miricle''. This so called ''Economic Miricle'' is apart from being built on human rights abuses, not least dispossess people in their 1000's from their homes and land. Including destroying villages and towns to build the biggest Dam in the world, see link >>> Relocation for Giant Dam Inflames Chinese Peasants But as construction started on the Three Gorges Dam about 200 miles down river, ... demonstrations and clashes between peasants and officials have been ...www.nationalgeographic.com/news/2001/05/0515_threegorges.html - 29k - Cached - Similar pages
.
Such factors not at all bother the majority of Sports people (and ''Torch Celebrities'') who just make me want to spit when they selfishly prattle on about Sports should not be involved in Politics. Of course it's lost on these selfish glory seekers that the same was being said about Hitlers Berlin Olympics of 1936, and cosying up to Hitler that helped to keep him in power and we all know what followed don't we. If you think that China's New World Order plans are much better that Hitlers New World Order, then think again and take care that you care about Tibet, as after all Tibet today - THE WORLD TOMORROW?
.
Whatever, what can we in Wales do, to pro-activelly show Solidarity. I would not call for a boycott of Chinese Restauraunts (Products yes! see links below) as most of these Chinese people fled the Communist Regime but I guess we could picket any Chinese Cultural Tours, I noted some time back a Chinese Orchestra was touring Wales but is that a rightouse thing to do? But we got to do something, and something pretty outstanding, so how's about these ideas as possibilities. Both the Chinese Guvernor of Tibet and the Nepalese authourities have threatened the harshest of treatment will me meted out to any Anti - Torch Protests that take place Tibet as the 'Torch of Shame' passes through that country. Already the Nepal Authorities are roughing up hard on any Tibetan exiles protesting but recently the Napalese Authorities have threated to get really harsh. By harsh hinting at possibly useing armed force to stop anyone making their way up Everest to protest, at same time as Chinese Mountaineers take the Torch to top of Everest.
.
Hopefully Mountain Climbers world wide will make protests on this matter of stoping people climbing Everest because China wants it that way. Mountaineers could let Nepal know they will consider a boycot of Nepal and climbing of Everest, if the Authourities there do not cool down. Maybe that's a step too far but what about this as a gesture by Mountain Climbers world wide, why not Mountain Climbers throught out the world climb their own national highest mountain with Tibetan and their own National Flags. Of course doing so on or about the same time as the Chinese will be climbing Everest with their 'Torch of Shame', indeed why not Mountaineers also take up their Mountains 'Torches of Liberty' as well as National Flags and Banners declaring for a Free Tibet and Human Rights Demands.
.
.
To organise the above would take quite an effort world wide, and I guess it's something the Worlds Mountaineering Community would have need to take lead on, organise and be pro-activelly involved in world wide. However, be great if Cymru/Wales could lead the way on this, we are perhaps fortunate in this direction because of the association of Yr Wyddfa/Snowdon in Eryri/Snowdonia having played a part in the original first and later successful climbs to summit of Everest. In this connection there would be a good place for people to assemble for a 'Torch of Liberty' walk up to top of Yr Wydda to light a 'Torch of Liberty' and rise up aforementioned flags and banners. That is from location of Pen y Gwyrdd, there is a route that leads towards summit of Yr Wyddfa, see this link>>>Pen-y-Gwryd - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Old Miners' Track from the Snowdon copper mines (incorporated into the modern A4086 road between Pen-y-Pass and Pen-y-Gwryd) continues northwards beyond ...en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pen-y-Gwryd - 41k - Cached - Similar pages . This may take some organisation, by whom? is open for discussion amongst those who would have a strong interest, taking account of when to organise for May, but as time is short I would hope that some existing body could organise this effectivelly. However, as time goes short then I suggest that it is also possible for individuals and groups do just carry out this activity themselves, noting there are easier routes up Yr Wyddfa and also there is the train for those unable to walk up (like me?).
.
If it can be detirmined as to about when the 'Torch of Shame' will be reaching the summit of Everest, I am not sure but it is already arousing much international attention which you need to keep very much informed on, via press and web. Not least if we wish this proposed Wales - Tibet Solidarity Action to be a good success, I hope those who read this will send this post to others by email link asap. Keeping in mind that part of that success means organising effective event promotion at home plus world wide publicity up to, during and after the event. Not least making good use of High Tech via Your Tube, Flicr and Face Book etc. Thinks about this! I am thus thinking that as urgency is required and there is little time to organise a special body to so organise would Cynefin or Seren organise perhaps or whomsoever? Even better, if Tibetans in Welsh Exile could help motivate these proposals forward, whatever? Other Organisations and Societies and even Individuals & groups. TAKE TIBETAN AND CYMRIC FLAGS UP YR WYDDFA.
.
Other than above do note, that the 'Torch of Shame' will be taken around Tibet before being taken up Everest, this could prompt Tibetan protest and a vicious suppresive re-action from the Chinese Authorities. If this be the case any Welsh - Tibetan Solidarity Campaign should immediatly step up Tibet Support Campaigning with Protest Demonstrations and Rallies etc. Note apart from marching on the National Assembly or whatever, events could be held at locations around Wales connected with the Everest Story, see >>>> BBC - Mid Wales Innovators - George Everest A profile of George Everest within the Mid Wales Hall of Fame. ... Do you know any more about Sir George Everest's life or his Crickhowell connections? ...www.bbc.co.uk/wales/mid/halloffame/innovators/george_everest.shtml - 31k - Cached - Similar pages and of course >>> Filming 'The Inn of the Sixth Happiness', Beddgelert, 1958 ... .
Well that's it, best I can do at moment, just issue call for interest and hopefully action, if anyone or a ''body'' interested in going further with this do contact me at g.apgruffydd@ntlworld.com but note, I am not in position to organise very much and organisers need to be Wales based and able to possibly meet at drop of an hat or rather should that be drop of the 'Torch of Shame'. TAKE TORCH OF LIBERTY TO YR WYDDFA!
.
PS: Maybe threaten Nepal with a Tourist Boycott, keep in mind that regards the Atlanta USA Olympics, a number of Black Civil Rights organisations threatened a Boycott. The issue then was, that if the old Confederate Battle Flag was flown, then Black Sports people would pull out of the games. This for sure focused the minds of Atlanta and the City authourities banned use of this flag. Since the campaign as continued to get Civil War Southern States to get rid of their use of the Confederate Flag, most have done so from public buildings, it's use publically is now limited to Civil War Memorials and such. The threat and campaign used was that of economic boycott against tourism to the Southern States and Conventions/Conferences being held there, this campaign continues against the ''Old South'' Die Hard State of Mississippi and certain ''Old South'' counties. But generally the campaign has been an overwealming success, maybe similar targeting Nepals Tourism Industry would have a similar effect, not least due to the fragile Political situation there following recent elections.

Hopefully all of above will provide you with ideas and initiatives you may be able to help kick off in May but carry on campaigning for a Free Tibet throughout the summer and certainly during the Olympics period.
.
NB: One last idea that comes to mind in this connection and Welsh Discontent with the Olympics being held in London 2012, now this is a very big idea so take note and take courage with the conviction, it can be done with plenty of time to organise it. WHY NOT LET US START TO ORGANISE AN ALTERNATIVE SMALL (Non Olympic Games Represented) NATIONS OLYMPIC GAMES FOR 2012 AND POSSIBLY ORGANISE IN AREA OF ERYRI BASED ON BEDDGERLERT FOR OBVIOUS REASONS. IN THIS CONNECTION WHY NOT IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE ABOVE PROPOSED 2008 MAY ANTI - 'TORCH OF SHAME' MOUNTAIN ACTION, USE OPPORTUNITY TO HOLD INFORMAL DISCUSSIONS ON THIS EXCITING 2012 INITIATIVE. INDEED ALSO IN ASSOCIATION WITH THIS PROPOSED FOURTH COMING 2008 EVENT ON YR WYDDFA, IT COULD BE ORGANISED MAYBE THAT A 'TORCH OF LIBERTY' COULD BE LIT ON YR WYDDFA AND RUNNERS IN RELAY TAKE IT TO BEDDGERLERT (Site of where that film was made) WHERE A BEACON IS LIT AND A CALL MADE FOR THE FIRST 2012 ALTERNATIVE SMALL NATIONS OLYMPIC GAMES TO BE HELD HERE IN ERYRI, CYMRU ( in later years other Small Nations will be hosts). LATER, SOMEHOW ''SYMBOLIC FLAMES'' ARE SENT OUT TO SMALL NATIONS WITH INVITATIONS REQUESTING THEM TO SEND THEIR TEAMS TO PARTICIPATE IN THESE GAMES. Now that's just instant thinking into words onto page, hoping to encourage some support for this enterprizing endevour, if your up for supporting, let me know. Of course other ideas and suggestions are welcome, last thought on subject for me, is that 1st August is 'Dydd Lughnasadha', a Celtic Feast Day devoted to LUGH the Celtic Sun God, almost a ZEUS? Do you see where I am going with this? Yes! we can tie in some thing Celtic here, what I do not know as of yet, will have to go and check out my Celtic Mythology. Suffice to say for now, that in years gone by, it used to be traditonal for Celtic Peoples to take walks into the Mountains annually on 1st August, this tradition was retained in Ireland into late 19th century. Whatever, I am trying to connect some Celtic Mythology here, as Greek Mythology is tied to the Olympics, it may become useful in the marketing ''Iconography'' regards prizes and products etc. So, everyone start major reading up on our Celtic Mythology and traditional games and sports, as we could go down the road with this as an Alternative International Smamm Nations Tradional Games and Sports of that which is traditional to small nations. Anyway think on it but do not take too long, as if there is enough support for the basics of all this, then maybe we can get a more of an agenda together for a meeting in May as suggested.
