LEST WE FORGET - THE PRICE OF COAL! Remember 21 October Our Annual National Colonial/Capitalist Oppression and Exploitation Day.

Lest We Forget. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Jump to: navigation, search. Lest We Forget is a phrase in Recessional (poem), by Rudyard Kipling. ...

'Lest We Forget' is much associated with remembrance of WW I & II thanks to an original poem by Rudyard Kipling, see link below. Last year, I stopped being mean minded and bought a poppy and poppy cross to place in remembrance of my grandfather who had fought on the Western Front in WW I and had been wounded twice. My Mam tells me that he learnt to sew and mend shoes whilst recovering in a Belgian Hospital, I have a photo of him taken there and still have the Rosary Beads given to him by a Belguin Nun/Nurse. Mam says he continued to sew and mend shoes for the rest of his life, grandfather was politically socialist and active in the 1935 stay down strikes of which my Mam then a young teenager remembers a little still despite now suffering dementia and being in 'care'. She remembers meetings in support of those 'Staying Down', food collections and photos in the local papers of when the Miners came up from their under ground protest. Most of her time she actually 'lives' back in her 'Merthyr Childhood' so her long term memory is not too bad to a degree, that is if she's in the mood to talk about it. At this point, I must say take opportunity to telly you asap to talk to parents and grand parents and record for posterity what they have to say while you have the chance to do so. As to why it is important, see link below

28 Sep 2010 ... HWB HANES CYMRU/WELSH HISTORY HUB. ALL MATTERS WELSH HISTORY ... ORAL HISTORY also MEMORY WARS - HAUNTED EUROPE with Alan Dein BBC WORLD ...hwbhanes.blogspot.com/

Long ago Mam had told me that it was her father who had taught her the alphabet and would play cards with her before he went to work, took her for walks in the park to listen to political orators. Grandfather was quite an hard man and according to my Dad had done 'Mountain Fighting' in his youth, so it's nice to know that a fella as he, took an interest and concern for his daughter has much as he did. Too much Mam would tell me, as when she was Eighteen he would say ''home by nine'' and he would be by the open door waiting for her at 'nine' or else up into town looking for her. His first child a boy born a year and some months before my Mam tragically died at a very young age, not much older than that year and a few months. He was to be killed in a 'Colliery Accident', after being shot twice in WWI a bloody 'Colliery Accident' kills him! Mam told me he would never talk of the war unless an 'old sweat' called around and they would go into the parlour out of which a lot of swearing could be heard usually to do with 'war leaders'. This is probally where I get my 'left view' on Welsh Nationalism from and often show my 'Hwntw Horror' of most things with a rural 'crachach' Pacifist Cultural Nationalist shade to it. How and why I became a Welsh Nationalist is not something I regret but on the other hand now, today I regret supporting much to do with Welsh Nationalism. Not least as most will be aware I have got no time for 'Y Crachach' - England's Client Tribe in Wales. Hope, I make up for my some time mistaken Welsh Nationalist ways with 'Red Remembrancer' and 'Adfywiad Goch' blogs:

Mam's mother would have to eventually shout to the men ''Stop that Swearing your daughter can here you'', in passing Mam's mother was a Bar Maid in Port Talbot during World War I and courting an English Sailor, he was killed in the Battle of Jutland. If he had not been killed and she had married him my history might never have happened or been entirely different and maybe Welsh History of the 'Sixties' would have been changed, at least a little anyway, spooky that! I have loads of family fotos and a post card collection from this period and prior. I just got to get down to some serious family history soon one of the reasons my 'Welsh Remembrancing' days are coming to a conclusion at 1st Tachwedd 2010 but my 'Red Rememberancing' will go on a little longer as will my Welsh Republican Agit - Prop Agitation, if just to stay on the backs of the fakes and frauds out there. Which brings me to my declaring 21 October as annually a day to remember the exploitation of our nation, communities and people also expropriation of our land and it's natural resoures be it water as in case of 'Cofiwch Tryweryn', the Llyn Celyn Reservoir opened on 21 October 1965. Welsh Nationalists will be very familier with 'Cofiwch Tryweryn' as they will be of names of other reservoirs as Clywedog, Claerwn, Elan and not least Vyrnwy. However, Welsh Nationalists are not so mindfull in remembering 'Cofiwch Aberfan', not with parades but simply visiting the cemetary there to place floral tributes and yes 'Ivy Crosses' as I did last year. Welsh Nationalists I have no doubt will be aware of the true 'Cost of Coal' and be aware of major mining disasters as at Greshford and Sengenydd but there were many, many more most now forgotten as let me just list those that occured in the month of October:

* 14 Hydref 1913: Universal Coliery, Senghenydd 439.

* 17 Hydref 1863: Morfa Colliery, Taibach, Port Talbot 39 Dead.

* 29 Hydref 1909: Darren Colliery, New Tredegar 26 Dead.

* 13 Hydref 1858: Lower Duffryn Colliery, Mountain Ash 20 Dead.

* 13 Hydref 1858: Primrose Colliery, Ystalyfera 14 Dead.

* 1 Hydref 1902: Tirpentwys Colliery, Gwent 8 Dead.

* ? Hydref 1754: Llangyfelach Colliery, Swansea 5 Dead.

My thanks to John May and his book Reference Wales, Cardiff UWP 1994.

Puts things in perspective, yes! the above accounts for just one month and does not take into account those who were killed in other 'Industrial', Agricultural or Maritime Industries. I suggest all may be rememberd on the 21st October annually with floral and 'Ivy Cross' tributes placed at appropriate places whilst at some places it would be appropriate to hold annual commemorative ceremonies, there are now in existence a number of memorials to remind of the contribution of Coal Miners and familes to our nations history where such colud be annually held as example at:

    It's that time of year when 'Nats' start thinking of 1282 and all that! but what to do about Dafydd III though? is he worth remembering at all for any reason?
